Alcohol Substance Abuse Treatment

What is alcohol abuse?

The alcohol consumption guidelines for American adults state that up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is considered moderate drinking. A single drink is:

  • 12 ounces of beer
  • 5 ounces of wine
  • 1.5 ounces of spirits or distilled liquor
  • 8 ounces of malt liquor

Heavy drinking is defined as more than eight drinks per week for women or 15 or more drinks for men. Binge drinking involves having more than four drinks in a single session.

However, these numbers are guidelines, and not everyone who drinks heavily has alcohol dependency or addiction.

How do I know if I have an alcohol addiction?

Alcohol dependency or addiction occurs when you need alcohol to get through the day. Addiction is a brain disorder that triggers uncontrollable urges to use alcohol, despite increasingly negative consequences.

Signs of alcohol substance abuse disorder include the inability to control your cravings or stop drinking, lying about drinking, and trying to hide how much you drink.

When should I ask for help with alcohol substance abuse?

Excessive alcohol consumption has a negative effect on your health and well-being. It increases your risk of having an accident and developing a wide range of health problems, from diabetes to liver disease. If you want to stop drinking but have failed on your own, it’s time to ask for help.
