Mens Health Q & A

What are common men’s health issues?

There is a wide range of health issues that affect men. The life expectancy gap between men and women is narrowing, but you still need to look after your health and have regular exams so Dr. Bain can diagnose and treat health issues before they become problematic. Some common health conditions affecting men are:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Alcohol abuse and addiction
  • Mental health issues
  • Prostate cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease

Routine exams and health screenings can help Dr. Bain identify these issues and others before you start to experience symptoms. Make sure to share your personal and family medical history with Dr. Bain so she can accurately assess your risk.

How often should I have a physical?

While there has been some debate about the effectiveness of annual exams in preventing disease, there is no doubt that having a physical exam each year and health screenings at the appropriate times can identify health problems in their early and more treatable stages.

For example, if a routine blood panel reveals elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, Dr. Bain can order more extensive testing to identify the condition causing your test results. If you have prostate cancer, then you can start treatment. If not, you have the peace of mind of knowing you’re healthy.

What should I expect during a men’s health assessment?

Most physical exams follow a routine. You check in and complete your paperwork. A nurse calls you back and checks your weight and blood pressure. Then you meet with Dr. Bain. She listens to your heart and lungs and feels for abnormalities in your abdomen.

You and Dr. Bain talk about your overall health and wellness. If you have any symptoms or have noticed changes in your health, make sure to share them with Dr. Bain. She also needs to know about any medications or supplements you take, including over-the-counter vitamins.

Finally, if you need any additional health screenings, Dr. Bain performs them. She may provide referrals for further testing, such as a prostate exam or colonoscopy, or request a blood panel.
