Womens Health Q & A

What are common women’s health issues?

Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women, accounting for more than a quarter of deaths. Other common conditions that threaten women’s health and well-being include:

  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer's disease and dementia
  • Kidney disease
  • Abnormal cervical cells
  • Urinary incontinence

The testing completed during your annual exam can help Dr. Bain diagnose these conditions in their early stages and start treatment before your health suffers.

Why are annual physicals important to my health?

Most health conditions don’t cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Your physical exam and associated health screenings provide information that Dr. Bain uses to diagnose health problems early, which can make treatment more effective and easier. It also limits your risk of developing disruptive health symptoms.

Your physical exam is also an opportunity to talk to an experienced and friendly physician about your health and wellness, and get advice on how you can improve your health. Whether you’re concerned about your weight or have been feeling depressed, Dr. Bain can help you with customized preventive health care.

What should I expect during a women’s health visit?

Your annual women’s health visit begins like any other physical exam. A nurse checks your weight and blood pressure before you meet with Dr. Bain. Dr. Bain listens to your heart and lung function and feels your abdomen for abnormalities. If you’re due for a pelvic exam or Pap smear, she completes these critical women’s health screenings.

Dr. Bain also asks questions about your health and lifestyle. If you’ve noticed any changes in your health or new symptoms, make sure to share them with Dr. Bain. Feel free to ask for advice on how to improve your health.

What health screenings do I need?

There are several health screenings that you should have either annually or every few years. For example, you should have your blood pressure checked every year and a blood panel at least every other year to check for signs of conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol.

Additionally, you should have a Pap smear at least every three years if you have clear results, and an annual mammogram from the age of 40. You will also need to have colon cancer and bone density screenings occasionally after the age of 50. Dr. Bain can provide customized advice on what specific tests you need.
